Intro to Visual Storytelling: 5-Week Photography & Video Workshop Series

A beginner-friendly workshop series exploring photography, video, and visual storytelling. All levels and cameras welcome.

  • Attend one workshop or join the full five-part series and complete a project.
  • Trinity Square Video members attend all workshops for free.
  • Non-members may register for individual sessions or the full series.

Intro to Visual Storytelling is a 5-week, in-person workshop series designed to help participants understand their camera, trust their creative instincts, and bring ideas to life through photography and video.

This series emphasizes process over perfection — focusing on observation, intention, and storytelling rather than technical overwhelm. Sessions combine discussion, hands-on exercises, and collaborative exploration in a welcoming, low-pressure environment.

No prior experience required. All cameras welcome.

Instructor: Lu Lopez

What You’ll Explore

Over five Thursday sessions (3pm to 5pm), participants will build skills progressively:

Workshop #1 — Get to Know Your Camera (Feb 5): Understand the fundamentals of your camera and how basic settings affect the image. Learn to move beyond auto modes and build confidence with any camera.

Workshop #2 — Visual Narratives (Feb 12): Explore how images communicate meaning through sequence, mood, and point of view. Learn how to translate ideas, emotions, and intuition into visual stories.

Workshop #3 — Light 101: Light as a Story (Feb 19): Use light to shape mood, meaning, and emotion. Explore natural and artificial light as storytelling tools using accessible setups and everyday environments.

Workshop #4 — Shooting With Intention (Feb 26): Learn how ideas become images before the camera is turned on. Focus on planning, storyboarding, sequencing, and creating space for spontaneity during production.

Workshop #5 — Mini Project Lab (Mar 5): A collaborative, hands-on session centered on creating a short video piece. Plan, film, and assemble a project during the workshop — no experience required.
